Many Sunderland fans have never seen Marc Guiu play so, with his arrival on Wearside creating more competition up front, we thought we'd chat to Dom Smith from The Standard to tell us more...
Marc Guiu has so far played six top flight matches in his career, will his lack of experience limit his ability to score goals to help us stay up or is this the opportunity he’s been waiting for to show off his potential?
I think this is the opportunity he has been waiting for. What he has shown so far is that he has the movement and the game understanding to shine at a high level.
He managed six goals in nine Conference League appearances last season, how would you rate his performances in the competition?
I would say he did well. Not only did he make the most of those opportunities and find the net six times, he also made selfless runs and linked up well with wingers.
What kind of a striker is he?
One who prioritises movement over strength. He is similar in frame to a player like Hugo Ekitiké who Liverpool have just signed — unmistakably a striker, but with agility and pace.
What are his biggest strengths as a player?
Firstly his finishing, which is improving all the time. His runs, and his high-pressing are also impressive.
Where does he need to improve his game?
He must become more of a physical presence in order to be able to get the better of top Premier League centre-backs. This is what will ultimately decide whether this move is a success for him or not.
What do Chelsea fans think of him, do you see a future for him in the Chelsea team?
Chelsea fans can see there is a player in there but it is the Chelsea board and hierarchy who are even more convinced. They absolutely see him as a big part of the club’s bright future.
Do you think he’ll do well for Sunderland?
I think he will, but I think he is still too raw to be likely to score 12 goals or more. I think he will be one answer to their need for goals but not the only solution. I expect it to be a 7.5/10 loan.
Finally, what’s your favourite moment for him in a Chelsea shirt?
The hat-trick he scored against Shamrock Rovers in the Conference League.
