DEADLINE DAY ROUNDUP

ree

The final day of the transfer window summed up Sunderland's summer business: fast-paced, exciting and busy! Now the dust has settled, here's a comprehensive detailing of every piece of deadline day SAFC business.

OUTGOINGS:

ALAN BROWNE - BORO (LOAN)

With Sunderland's midfield undergoing a complete overhaul this summer, it left the likes of Alan Browne struggling for game time. This was the first announced exit of the day and it came at 6:30pm! Browne heads to Teesside on loan for the season in order to find regular minutes. His experience will prove valuable for their team, who are pushing for promotion once again this year.

JENSON SEELT - WOLFSBURG (LOAN)

Despite featuring prominently in our opening Premier League fixtures, the club have allowed Seelt to join Bundesliga side Vfl Wolfsburg on loan. With the likes of Mukiele, Alderete, Masuaku and now also Geertruida able to play at the heart of defence, presumably the club thought it was better to allow Seelt to play regularly abroad rather than have him sit on the bench and act as cover.

MARC GUIU - CHELSEA - (RECALL)

This was certainly a strange one. With Chelsea forward Liam Delap suffering a long-term injyry, the London club were looking at their options in the last few days. They initially decided not to loan out Nicolas Jackson but eventually made the choice to let Jackson leave, whilst recalling Guiu from what was supposed to be a season-long stay on Wearside. Reportedly, there was actually no recall clause in the Spaniard's contract which meant the two clubs had to come to a gentleman's agreement. It has been reported that Chelsea have paid us a fee which immediately went to covering some of the costs of our deadline day arrivals.

NIALL HUGGINS - WYCOMBE (RECALL)

Huggins is re-united with Mike Dodds in League One, with Wycombe Wanderers. There is no doubt over the fullback's ability, he's miles better than that league, but he simply needs regular minutes regardless of the level. Dodds knows what Huggins is all about which makes Wycombe a good environment for the 24-year-old to finally put his injuries behind him.

PATRICK ROBERTS - BIRMINGHAM (LOAN)

The most emotional exit of deadline day came when Patrick Roberts joined Birmingham City on loan. This is a player who took a risk in coming here when we were in League One and instantly proved his quality, dragging us out of that division. He was also vital in helping us beat Sheffield United at Wembley, with his assist for Mayenda's goal. It is a real shame that he hasn't been given the chance to test himself at top-flight level with Sunderland but at 28 years old he's at a point in his career where he needs to be starting matches.

OLI BAINBRIDGE - SOUTH SHIELDS (LOAN)

Finally, the Academy of Light confirmed that Oliver Bainbridge has joined South Shields until January 2026. Last season he spent time on loan with Kilmarnock and did well in both the Scottish Premier League and UEFA Conference League. The 20-year-old defender looks to help the Mariners build on a strong start to their campaign in the National League North.

INCOMINGS

LUTSHAREL GEERTRUIDA - RB LEIPZIG

The first confirmed signing of the day was Dutch international Geertruida, who provides versatility and squad depth. He can play right back, defensive midfield (useful during AFCON) and centre back. He's a physical, athletic presence and at 25 has experience in both Germany and his home country.

BRIAN BROBBEY - AJAX

Guiu was swiftly replaced in our attacking ranks by Brobbey, who is still only 23. He's played for Ajax over two spells and has been described as a physical, 'tradional' number nine who will act as a bit of a battering ram, creating space for his teammates and generally proving to be a handful for the defence.

BERTRAND TRAORE - AJAX

The third deadline day arrival, the second from Ajax, and the first ever Burkina Faso international to play for Sunderland! Traore appears to be a direct Roberts replacement - a left-footed right-winger with plenty of pace and directness, but with a bit more end product. Last season he scored 10 goals and registered eight assists. At 29 he's signed a one-year contract with the club's option of a year extension, so pretty low-risk. Apparently it was a mad dash to get this one over the line, but thankfully we've got it done and added some competition to the wide areas.
