On National Mackem Day, Sunderland have announced the signing of Paraguayan centre back Omar Alderete. He joins us from Spanish side Getafe having penned a four year deal.
Omar began his career in South America before earning a move into Europe where he has picked up experience in several leagues. Last season, Alderete was awarded with a spot in the La Liga Team Of The Season. Despite the signing being accompanied with the words 'undisclosed fee', reports suggest the fee was around the 10 million euros mark, another piece of smart business by Sunderland it seems.
Upon bolstering the defensive ranks, Kristjann Speakman said: “We are delighted to welcome Omar to Sunderland. He’s a player with extensive experience in European Club football and at the international level. It was important for us to identify and add a left-sided centre back for the group, and ensure the profile was aligned to our game model. In Omar, we have an aggressive and athletic player who can move the ball efficiently in possession. He’s connected to our story and where we want to go, and naturally excited about the opportunity to play in the Premier League.”
Here's what our new man had to say on the move: “When you are a kid in South America you always follow the Premier League, and I’ve always dreamt about playing in it. I’m always happy to represent my country and I know not many Paraguayans have come here. I hope to make my country proud and I want to do my best so that other Paraguayans can come here in the future.”
UP FOR THE FIGHT
“I always see every change as a challenge. I’m really happy and looking forward to getting started in the Premier League, ready to my give it my all make sure the team stays up and fight for great things. I heard about it and I read it too. As I said, I am here to help and be part of this and fight for something great and keep the team in the Premier League.”
READY FOR IT
“It’s always important to have the support of the people. I’m going to give it my all on the pitch and I hope the fans support me and the rest of the team.”
