AHOKA IS HERE

Sunderland have confirmed their third signing of the window with the announcement of Jules Ahoka.

The 20-year-old has moved to Wearside from Royal Antwerp for a fee of £8.6 million. Ahoka will wear the number 29 on his back.

Upon his signing he revealed, “I am very happy and proud to join Sunderland.

“I want to work hard, learn from my team-mates and the staff, and continue developing as a player.” It has widely been reported that the young midfielder is seen as Granit Xhaka’s understudy by many at the club. Ahoka played both of Antwerp’s league games this season following on from his breakthrough into the first team last May. He played four games for the side after his move from AC Normands last September.

The DR Congo defensive midfielder becomes Sunderland’s third signing of the season behind Thomas Meunier and recently announced Dayann Methalie.

“Jules is a player we have been following closely and he has shown some very encouraging qualities for his age,” Florent Ghisolfi said.

“His performance at the Toulon Tournament demonstrated his physicality, defensive qualities and mentality while he has also gained valuable experience in Belgium.

He has huge potential and we believe Sunderland AFC is the right environment for him to continue his development. We are delighted to welcome him to the club and look forward to supporting him as he takes the next steps in his career.”

The young midfielder will challenge fellow Congolese, Noah Sadiki, as well as Habib Diarra for game time in the centre of the pitch while also providing valuable cover for the Black Cats' Europa League games.

The arrival also gives Regis Le Bris more options in a tactical sense with Ahoka being described as athletic and physical which matches the way Sadiki plays in the Sunderland starting XI.

Jules Ahoka and Dayann Methalie will be registered in time for the Black Cat’s game against Fulham at the Stadium of Light on Sunday, where they will hope to bounce back after a disappointing defeat to Ipswich last time out.
