Charlie Wyke had a rather incredible final season at the Stadium of Light, scoring 31 goals across 54 appearances in all competitions having scored just 11 in 60 in his first two seasons. He spoke to us about why that season was so unique, and also discussed how the Lads have done since his 2021 exit.
STRANGEST SEASON WE WILL EVER HAVE
“The COVID season is probably the strangest season we will ever have in any football season. Scoring all them goals and not being able to celebrate in front of the fans was devastating really but obviously we still had to go and do our jobs. I always look back and think ‘imagine if I had scored that many goals with a full stadium and full away ends’ it would have been unbelievable.”
COVID REST PERIOD
“I got injured early on in my Sunderland career and I think it affected me for two years. So, the time we had in the off period during COVID I let my body get back to a normality. I worked really hard but it’s just a shame there were no fans in there because they are an unbelievable club. I am so happy to see how well they are doing now.”
CURRENT SEASON
“Everybody knows how big of a club Sunderland are but to get to where they are now in such a short space of time is an unbelievable achievement. The way they have done it is crazy. When I left I would never have thought they would be in the Premier League within five years but I am so happy for the club because they are a Premier League club at the end of the day. To have played for them in League One, it was obviously special but everybody around the place could feel they were far too big for that league.”
