Sunderland Women’s summer looks to be just as busy as the men’s this year, with seven lasses set to leave Wearside. Here is a short profile on those departing…

GRACE EDE

Grace has spent her whole football career up until this point at Sunderland (12 years). Starting in the academy, earning her debut in October 2021 and featuring 60 times in the starting line-up for Sunderland, Grace moves to Durham Women Football Club on a free transfer.

AMY GODDARD

Amy Goddard spent two unforgettable seasons at Sunderland as our number four, but has now made the decision to join Southampton Women.

BORTHWICK/DEAR/MCATEER

It is unclear where they will go at the minute, however, Megan Borthwick, Jenna Dear and Mary McAteer will also be leaving Sunderland.

LOANEES

Jessie Stapleton and Keira Flannery will go back to their parent club, West Ham after being on loan to Sunderland for the 24/25 season.

MEGAN BEER

The final player leaving Sunderland is Megan Beer. Megan has spent her whole football career at Sunderland and has now made the decision to retire at the age of 32. She made an amazing 124 appearances during her career in red and white across all of her 11 seasons. Alongside her footballing career, Megan is a full-time firefighter and has balanced the two careers over the last few years.

On her retirement, Beer said: “It’s never going to be a happy feeling being here for so long and working with Mel for so long, but I’m feeling ready for it. It’s really nice to have seen all the changes in the women’s game over the years. To the fans, thank you for all the support continued through tough and good times, it doesn’t go unnoticed. To the staff and players, thank you, I’ll not forget you, and I love you all.”

Happy retirement, Meg!
