PADEL AT THE BEACON
One of the world’s fastest-growing sports has arrived at Sunderland’s Beacon of Light, with two brand-new padel courts now open.
Located next to the Stadium of Light, the covered outdoor courts offer a new place for people to try the increasingly popular sport, play with friends or add something different to their fitness routine. Just nine minutes from Sunderland city centre and accessible on foot via Keel Crossing, the courts provide a convenient option for players looking to get involved in the sport.
With a distinctive red and white playing surface, a fitting look at the home of Sunderland AFC’s official charity, Foundation of Light, the canopied courts are suitable for all-weather play. Combining elements of tennis and squash, padel is typically played as doubles on an enclosed court. The sport has grown rapidly in popularity across the UK and internationally, thanks in part to its accessibility for players of different ages and abilities.
Court bookings start at just £24 per hour during off-peak times, with peak-time bookings available for £40 per hour. Racket hire costs £2.50, while tubes of balls can be purchased from reception at the Beacon of Light for £7.50. Players can also visit the Beacon’s Yard Nine café before or after a game, with a range of hot and cold drinks, food and snacks available.
Foundation of Light CEO Lesley Spuhler OBE said: “Padel has grown enormously in popularity and we’re really excited to bring it to the Beacon of Light. We want the Beacon to be a place where people can be active, try new things and enjoy spending time, and these courts are another fantastic addition to what we can offer. Our location is a real strength too. We’re incredibly accessible, close to the city centre and right next to the Stadium of Light, with two brilliant red and white courts that feel very much at home here. Most importantly, by choosing to play at the Beacon, customers are also supporting Foundation of Light and helping us continue our work with communities across the region.”
