Ahead of tonight's clash against second-bottom Luton, we spoke to Simon Darwen from We Are Luton Town who explained what's gone wrong for the Hatters this season after tasting the riches of the Premier League just a year ago.
Second-bottom of the league with seven wins, six draws and 17 defeats. What's been the story of your season so far?
The greatest hangover in world football, sadly. Part of me thinks it was almost to be expected. I think perhaps we got a bit too used to losing. We have an incredible squad so it’s been particularly baffling to all of us. Maybe a few were surprised or had perhaps forgotten how brutal the Championship can be.
Rob Edwards left the club in January, what went wrong after he was so popular with you guys in the Premier League?
Rob had a vision for a formation and a style of play that he believes in. We all desperately wanted it to work but there was definitely a disconnect in the end. Defensively we lacked a bit of discipline and teams were quickly learning how to exploit us.
Sometimes things just run their course. He will forever have credit in the bank with Luton fans for taking us to the Promised Land. I think perhaps he needed a break and it may be a while before he takes another managerial role.
What do you think of the new man in the dugout, Matt Bloomfield?
The right target at the right time. Someone who saw us as a step up and a platform upon which to build something. He talks a very good game so far and I really hope he can start a new culture at the club. We didn’t want a quick fix older manager just picking up a wage until something more lucrative came along. We want someone who wants to be here long term.
Carlton Morris is your top scorer with seven goals, what kind of striker is he?
He's the hardest working player at the club. Has so many attributes to his game. A very powerful player. If he get’s the service he can be lethal.
Other than Morris, who are some of your best players?
Alfie Doughty is an incredible talent. Set pieces and crossed into the box unrivalled at the club. Thomas Kaminski also has to be one of the best keepers in the league.
You're only two points from safety as things stand, do you think you'll stay up?
Yes. It’ll be close but we should have enough.
Has your January business aided your survival campaign?
Definitely, there have been some really great acquisitions. A few players that we don’t know massive amounts about but Thelo Aasgard and Millenic Ali looks like great prospects ready to take the step up in level.
Which Sunderland player worries you the most?
Wilson Isidor. No question about that!
What's your score prediction
1-1, with strikers Morris and Isidor both getting on the scoresheet.
Finally, where do you reckon both sides will finish this campaign?
Luton 21st, Sunderland 2nd.
