OPPOSITION VIEW: BURNLEY

Ahead of our top of the table clash with Burnely at Turf Moor, we spoke to the lads at TurfCast for an insight into all things Burnley as they sit just two points ahead of us...

2nd in the league with 14 wins, 10 draws and just two defeats. What's been the story of your season so far?

We’ve been brilliant defensively so far this season and that’s provided the basis for a promotion push. We haven’t been great going forward but thanks to our record-breaking defence we’ve slowly climbed up the table.

What do you think of Scott Parker?

He’s doing a good job for me. His style of play means a lot of fans shout and scream from the rooftops about how ‘poor’ he is. But when you look at what he’s had to deal with, when you look at all our quick-fire sales in the summer and a squad thrown together at the last minute - to be where we are now is a good achievement.

Josh Brownhill is your top scorer with nine, and top assister with three. What kind of player is he?

He’s a brilliant player in this league, been in with a shout for our player of the season so far. He’s the type of player that spearheads a midfield and plays behind the striker trying to create things for us, but as you’ve said he scores a few as well for us. Having a great season, and seems to have found his place in the midfield as there was times when he was played deeper, which has never been his thing, when he struggled to get into games.

What signings do you need to make this month, if any? Do you think any big names will be sold?

None of the starting lads will be going anywhere, hopefully, but I’m pretty confident on that. We have struggled to score goals as said so I wouldn’t mind seeing a striker come in or a creative player to come into the forward line.

Which Sunderland player worries you the most?

I think Sunderland are where they are because of their midfield. You’ve got some young lads in there but they always have bags of energy, as we saw in the reverse game up at the SoL. So Rigg and Bellingham in the middle are a concern - if they press us as well they did in August then we will be in for a long evening. Concerned about Le Fee as well, but just interested to see where he fits into your team at this stage.

What’s your score prediction for the game and who will get the goals?

Burnley games never have a lot of goals in them. A very large majority of our games have been under 2.5 goals - in the league nobody has scored more than one goal in a game against us yet this season and we haven’t scored more than two in a game since August, which was before our squad was dismantled. So this will probably be 4-4!

In all seriousness I think it’s a tough one to call so I’m sitting on the fence with a 1-1

Finally, where is the best place for a travelling Sunderland fan to have a pre-match pint?

If you’ve been to the Turf before you will be well aware of Burnley cricket club, which is literally next to the ground and is a well known ‘away pub’ which has parking. Perfect.
