Dan Neil gave his assessment on Sunderland's goalless draw with Burnley and praised Wilson Isidor for stepping up to take a second penalty and being brave enough to take on that burden.

TAKE THE POSITIVES

“I thought for the first 10-15 minutes we started quite slow and they started quick, obviously being at home and in such a big game, but I thought we grew into the game really well. Didn’t really create too much in the first half but I think in the second half we created more than enough to win, even without the two penalties. We’ve got to take the positives that we’ve come here and they’ve come away buzzing with a point from it. We need to take those positives into Tuesday and bounce back.”

ISIDOR

“It’s obviously going to be a tough experience for him but I think it kind of shows his character, the character he brought to the club since the day he came in, that he wants to score goals for this football club. He has scored goals for the club and I think we’d be in a worse spot if he wasn’t in the team. He took the first penalty, obviously missed, and he’s basically had the balls to pick it up and say ‘no, I want to score goals for this team and I want to win this game’. Unfortunately it didn’t happen for him tonight but I commend his bravery and his courage to go and want to score goals for this football team. I thought he’s brought a different dynamic up front to what we’ve had in the last two years and he’s going to be a massive player for us in the run-in to try and fight for the automatic spots. Players, staff, fans, we all need to get behind him because like I said, he’s going to be massive and hopefully he bounces back on Tuesday.”

HARD TO BEAT

“We said before the game, if we can’t win - obviously we want to take three points - then don’t lose the game. You’re coming to a tough place, these don’t concede many goals especially at home. I didn’t really feel like they were going to score, they put a bit of pressure on in the first 10-15 but other than that I didn’t feel like they would score. I think it’s obvious we could have taken three points tonight and it’s unfortunate we didn’t. Good teams make sure they don’t lose games, and we didn’t. We’ll take the point and move on to Tuesday, and hopefully bounce back with three.”

ONTO DERBY

“It’ll be a different challenge going to Pride Park against a tough Derby team. But like I said, we’ll take the positives from tonight, rest, recover and make sure we’re ready to go on Tuesday to take all three points.”
