YOUNG STRIKER CLOSE TO JOINING BLACK CATS

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

Sheffield United starlet Daniel Jebbison is the subject of a loan bid from Lee Johnson, with the 18-year-old in the stands for Sunderland’s friendly against Hull City.

Although a deal is yet to be agreed with the Championship club, Sunderland seem to be ahead in the race for Jebbison with a number of clubs interested. The striker made four senior appearances for the Blades last season in the Premier League, and his goal against Everton made him the youngest player to score on their first Premier League start.

New Sheffield United boss Slavisa Jokanovic rates the youngster as a hot prospect, but feels that Jebbison needs to develop in the lower leagues. With Charlie Wyke leaving Wearside, the need for reinforcements is glaringly obvious despite Grigg and Stewart both getting a goal last night. Given the youngster’s lack of experience, it is yet to be seen if he can handle the rigors of a League One promotion push.

Sunderland were forced into a number of late changes for the friendly, with the squad coming down with cases of gastroenitis. Head Coach Lee Johnson also missed the dress rehearsal with the illness. Despite this, the makeshift side put in a solid performance against a decent Championship team. The youngsters in particular impressed, with Elliot Embleton standing out. Given his promotion with Blackpool last season, and the fact he’s been given the number eight this year, Embleton seems to be ready to take on a big role at the Stadium of Light. Hopefully the introduction of the creative midfielder can ease the burden of creativity for Aiden McGeady, who missed out due to pre-planned injections for tendonitis.
