MOWBRAY A GREAT FIT

Watching and following Sunderland at the moment is really quite enjoyable. That has been the case since the Division One play off final. How often could we have said that in the past? And much of this has to do with Tony Mowbray, who despite my initial reservations when he was appointed is turning out to be a great fit at Sunderland.

For sure, Tony has shown my initial reservations to be unwarranted. Alex Neil’s departure so early in the season certainly shocked many supporters as it was seemingly out of the blue. But take a look at Stoke’s position and take a look at Sunderland’s. There’s no one lamenting his departure now.

Most supporters were stating the key thing they wanted from this season was safety. Not tempting providence but we appear to have got that already. Whilst many will think it is way too early for Sunderland to think about promotion after just joining the Championship, the fact that we are just outside the top six is another cause for additional excitement, though another play off victory at Wembley would seem to be a season or two too early.

We gave a great squad, and gave Fulham a good run for their money in the cup and then we drew ugly against Millwall and battled to get all three points against Reading. Mowbray has his finger on the pulse of this young side. He is building up their confidence and experience whilst also allowing more experienced players like Patrick Roberts to truly reveal their considerable potential.

There is harmony in the squad and even after the tragic loss of Ross Stewart to injury we can hope that Gelhardt settles into his striking role quickly. God knows Mowbray has plenty of experience and he has always liked football to look good as well as being effective. The players like him, the supporters like him, the Board seem happy and so am I.

Thank you Tony and keep up the good work.
