MEETING KING CHARLIE

More than a week after his death, tributes and personal stories continue to pour in from Sunderland fans who adored Charlie Hurley. The following letter was submitted to ALS by John Felton.

I met the real King Charles in 1960. I knocked on his door in Hovingham Gardens, No. 2 from recollection, and asked if I could have an interview for our school magazine, The Tonstall Times. To my surprise and great relief, he invited me in and we sat in the living room while Mrs Hurley made cups of tea and found some biscuits. I was 11.

Charlie told me of his story so far and I wish I could remember what he told me, but it was a long time ago and even the published version has disappeared. He was extremely kind and not at all condescending. The ‘interview’ must have gone for 20 minutes or so. A lovely man.

Incidentally, he lived about 30 yards from Johnny Mapson, Sunderland’s keeper in the 1937 FA Cup win. Johnny was in Hipsburn Drive, No. 2 or 3? Not many years later, Monty moved into Hipsburn Drive. If we ever get to Wembley again, can we move Patto to the area?
