Sunderland all rounder Lynden Gooch spoke after the 1-0 victory at home to Crewe Alexandra midweek which came after a victory on the road at Swindon. The American talked about the importance of keeping clean sheets and how he hopes the momentum can be kept going forward.
“I thought we were brilliant, especially first half, we created loads of chances and even second half we should’ve put the game to bed. Everyone done the job and we defended really well and kept that clean sheet. It’s massive that the whole team works to defend from the front; it’s obviously not just the players at the back but the midfield too and Charlie (Wyke) up front so it’s a great platform for us and gives us great confidence to have the best defence in the top four divisions. It’s important to keep the ball out our net but then to go forward and capitalise as well. We’ve done what we needed to do back to back wins and clean sheets so we move on and hope to continue. I’ve played wing back a couple of times, a few seasons ago and I’ve played four different positions in the last four games so I can play all over the park and I feel I’ve been putting in some good performances. We were unlucky not to hit the target more but as long as we get into those positions. Once one goes in, they’ll start flying in. We’re looking forward to playing Pompey on Saturday, there’s been a bit of a rivalry between us over the last few seasons so it’ll be good.”
Charlie Wyke post Crewe
“It was a tough game in the end and it was hard but we got the three points and it’s always good to get another goal. It’s been a good start to the season so I hope that continues. It was a great ball in by Goochy (Lynden Gooch), he’s been good out wide and since he’s been there his quality in the box has been good so I hope it continues and I can keep getting on the end of stuff. When you’re keeping clean sheets it’s always a good base to go forward from there, we are disappointed that we didn’t score more but at the end of the day, it’s still three points. I’m feeling good now, I had a good pre-season, and probably the first full pre-season I’ve played in two or three years. I’m feeling fit and sharp so I hope it continues. We’ve been working hard on our team shape, even when we get the ball, everyone is still working hard. Portsmouth is always a good game so I’m looking forward to it, like I say we just need to have a rest now for a couple of days and give it all we’ve got on Saturday.”
