New loan signing, Dion Sanderson has spoke for the first time since joining Phil Parkinson’s men from Wolves on a season long loan deal. The youngster can play at either centre half or at the right side of defence.
“I was just delighted to get the deal done, it’s a chance for me to play and Sunderland is a massive club. I’m delighted to be here and I just want to get started now. I went there (Cardiff) last season and got a decent 10 games under my belt and that was a good first test and I think coming here is the right decision for myself and I couldn’t be happier to be here. The history that Sunderland have had was a big factor in me coming here, like I said it’s a massive club and it’s a chance for me to play and be part of this journey which I think will see Sunderland go really far in the future. I’m coming here blind, not knowing anyone but once you get talking to the lads and the backroom staff it feels like you’ve known them for years so it was a good first day. The dressing room atmosphere is really important, it’s the most important thing in football, having a good relationship with the lads and building those bonds. The dressing room is where we get that togetherness, that desire to win and get ready for any battle. I feel I have a good understanding of the formation we play; it’s a similar one to that at Wolves. I watched the Swindon game on Saturday and I’ve spoken to the gaffer and I’m comfortable with that, I love playing how I want to play and that formation allows me to do that. I’m grateful to be playing wherever I can help and where I’m needed and wherever the gaffer wants me to play. I’m a natural centre back but I enjoy playing right back too, getting up there and getting some assists but I love defending and keeping clean sheets, all the dirty part of it. Either role suits me. I’m ready, I’m hungry and I just want to get started, get working and play some football.”
