Born on this day in 1989 is former Sunderland forward Chris Maguire. The Scotsman was at Sunderland between 2018 and 2021, failing to get the club promoted from League One.
Maguire began his career at Aberdeen, making his debut in May 2006. He set up John Stewart’s equaliser against Scottish champions Celtic, in a 2-2 draw. Despite first appearing in May, Maguire would have to wait until December to make his first start for the Dons, when he played on Boxing Day against Kilmarnock and also scored his first senior goal in the same game!
In the next couple of years, Maguire was in and out of the side but showed glimpses of quality whenever he played. He requested a loan move after being kept out of the side by strikers Darren Mackie and Lee Miller, but the request was turned down. In typical Maguire fashion, he went on to score a brace in the following match; a 5-0 win over East Fife.
