Pre-Accy Presser

September 12, 2019

Here’s Jack Ross’ pre-Accrington Stanley press conference…

Post Peterborough international break

"The preference is always to play again straight after a defeat. Generally, players prefer matches to training. If you have just won one you can't wait to play again. If you have lost one then the only time players really look for a break is if you are on a really bad run. We had been on a really good run so after losing one we would have liked to get back out there as quickly as we could. Obviously that never happened. It has allowed us to rest a little bit but then have a really good week on the training pitch. They have looked refreshed, they have looked at it and we can't wait to get out there on Saturday."

Has the break been useful?

"I have enjoyed it. We had a little bit of time off which helps players and staff. We are not going to have a full week's training over the next few weeks. So from a coaching point of view and having that proper time on the training pitch, it has felt like one of those weeks we could get a lot from and hopefully we will see the benefit of that over the next few weeks."

On Duncan Watmore's injury

"It is a muscular injury. At the moment the timescale is looking like another two or three weeks from now. That can change either way but that is where we are at at the moment. It is frustrating for him, it is frustrating for me but that is the nature of the game. All we can do is ensure we get him physically right to play and then make sure we support him emotionally to deal with all of the challenges he has had to face."

When Ross believes the league table will begin to take shape

"I do think once we get this next block of fixtures out of the way the table will start to settle into some sort of pattern. We want to be up there again and putting ourselves in a position to kick on through the autumn months again."

On takeover talk

"All my focus is on what I can do on the training pitch. Through my time here I have had to deal with a lot of speculation so I have learned through the period to concentrate on doing the best job I can at hand. Whatever happens, happens. I can't speak completely for the players because the time I spend in the changing room is less than the players themselves but they don't seem overly concerned by it. We have just cracked on with the job in hand and that has certainly been the case during the past month as well."

In other news, our new left back, Laurens De Bock, has been chatting out his hopes of establishing himself at SAFC and earning himself a permanent deal. “The day I arrived there was a practice game that day but I wasn’t involved because I only arrived in the morning and the game was at 12.30pm, so I’ve only been training so far. I don’t know yet [when I’ll play], I’ll have to see from the manager when the time is right to play. I’ve just got to get training and see how far we get. We spoke about it and if everything goes well and I feel good over here we can always talk about the possibilities,” he said. “We will see how the next few months go. There’s no option in the deal but I think the contact between Sunderland and Leeds has been very good.”

At the back end of the 1980s, football fanzines began to sweep the country and in 1989 we were presented with a new vehicle on which to enjoy some of this ride – A Love Supreme. ALS was a place we could all go to celebrate and commiserate being a Sunderland fan. Win, lose or draw, the pages of the fanzine became solace for many of us as we stumbled our way through our day to day lives, punctuated by the ups and downs of more match days than any of us care to remember.
