Lee Cattermole has agreed a settlement with Sunderland to buy out his £40k a week contract and has left SAFC with immediate effect. An SAFC statement said: “Lee has been a great servant for SAFC and we wish to place on record our thanks for his dedication for the past 10 years and we wish him the very best in the future.”

Catts said: “Sunderland is a special club and this decision has not been easy, but I believe it is the right time to find a new challenge. The football club, over my 10 years, has had some fantastic managers, staff and players and I have been lucky to be part of that. I would like to say a big thank you to Jack Ross and his staff, and I wish him and the current squad all the best for the coming season. There are some exciting young players at the club and I will be looking forward to seeing them progress. And finally, and most importantly, the fans. You are what makes the club special and your passion and commitment is something that has always inspired me throughout my career at Sunderland and will continue to inspire the team. Thank you.”

We’ve also completed the signing of Northern Ireland international Conor McLaughlin. The 27-year-old free agent has signed a two-year deal. Jack Ross said: “I am delighted to be able to bring Conor to the club. He brings quality and experience to a position that was of high priority for us to have options in. I look forward to working with him over the course of the season.”

SAFC have also announced a pre season friendly against SC Heerenveen at the Stadium of Light on Saturday 27 July at 7pm, despite the Sunderland International Airshow also taking place.

Sunderland AFC’s managing director, Tony Davison, said: “Having a home friendly the week before the season starts is always the preference from a footballing perspective, but this has been a challenge in recent years with the dates coinciding with Sunderland International Airshow weekend. Through our partnership with the city council we have worked to find a solution and have agreed on the optimum time to stage a game, which allows supporters and visitors to the city to enjoy all that the airshow has to offer, and then come along to the game. With hundreds of thousands of visitors coming to the city it’s a great weekend for Sunderland and the football club is proud to be part of that.”

The chief executive of Sunderland City Council, Patrick Melia, added: “This looks set to be another great weekend for the city with an international friendly and the Sunderland airshow. We’ll be working with the club to make sure the SC Heerenveen fans get a warm welcome to the city and I hope many will decide to stay for the weekend to enjoy our fabulous airshow and all that Sunderland has to offer.”
