Post Walsall Presser

Updated: Aug 4

Sunderland came from behind to beat Walsall 2-1 at the SOL in blustery conditions on Saturday and make up ground on Barnsley in the hunt for automatic promotion. Jack Ross had this to say afterwards: “I’m delighted, it’s a big win for us in difficult conditions again today, like Tuesday was at Barnsley. We had to find a way to win. I’m disappointed the way we started, some of the defending, satisfied with the number of opportunities and to win from a losing position. We had been knocking on the door for a period at that time. It was fair when we went in level at half-time and I just wanted them to keep going. It is very easy to be critical as a manager, but overall as a manager to see out the game and get three points then it is good. For every sub you get right you will get one wrong, some are enforced, I think Charlie has had a difficult period of late, this season, for a number of reasons. I am pleased for him he has had a big part in the goal that won it for us today. This weekend shows, looking back at Tuesday, the only time you can really get caught up in the positions is with two or three games to go. There are so many points still to play for and this weekend shows that. The important thing is we won because don’t play for a few weeks. It’s a happy changing room because we want to win that.”

Will Grigg was delighted with his winning goal but also gave credit to Charlie Wyke for the assist. "It's a massive win. It was a really difficult game; the conditions out there weren't easy. It wasn't the prettiest but the main thing was the three points and a really big win. It's a good bit of play. The ball into Charlie and then, I think it was probably his first touch, he's set me up nicely and my touch is perfect. I didn't even think about it, as soon as I've got in that area I've just let rip and it's nice to see it go in the bottom corner. It's one of those things we've been working on in training and sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Luckily today that was perfect and I'm sure the fans will be pleased with that. Charlie's a great lad and I thought he did really well when he came on. Obviously we've got the cup game coming up but it was important to finish this period in the league on a high and that's exactly what we've done."
