Jack Ross is delighted to be getting more out of Aiden McGeady, but never doubted his ability. He explained: “I came up against Aiden as a player when he was 18, 19, 20, 21 and so I’ve first-hand experience of how difficult he is to play against. I’ve never had any doubts about Aiden. He has a lot of misconceptions about him but his attitude and approach in terms of what I have asked him to do has been absolutely brilliant. I enjoy a really positive relationship with Aiden that’s reflected in his displays on and off the ball. It’s just a matter of getting him in the right place and right frame of mind and he’s in that at the moment. Do that and he’ll produce moments of magic.”

Jack Ross’ side now face two weeks without a league game, but instead have away trips to Port Vale and Morecambe in the FA Cup and Football League Trophy. “I am pleased we have a game. Sometimes it is not a bad thing [a break]. We have been on a terrific run, it will give us a bit of freshness. I always think the FA Cup gives a bit of excitement to the week and freshness and playing an opponent that isn't in our league,” Ross argued. The players will enjoy this week, they will be excited that it is a cup tie and we want to progress in that as well. We have a busy week that week, managed to squeeze the two cup games in."

In other news, Jack Baldwin loves clean sheets! “To get four clean sheets on the bounce is brilliant but we're a team that demands the best from each other and we want five, six, seven – to keep bashing them out, really,” he said. “You come away from home and look to stay solid first and foremost. We've got quality going forward so as long as we do our job at the back, the lads going forward will do theirs. Big Jon (McLaughlin, Sunderland's goalkeeper) has done brilliantly again for us and we don't want to call on him too much but when he was on Saturday, he pulled off some big saves. I think people have sussed out what the league's about really. I've played in League One all my career so I know what it's all about but there are probably some lads who've come down from the Championship and even higher levels who didn't know what to expect. Clean sheets were hard to come by at the start of the season but now everyone knows what it's about we're finding our feet, we're solid and we'll always score goals. The top two is where we want to be so it's good for other teams to look at us and see we're climbing. Now we're in there we want to stay in there and keep churning out results. There were probably some people at the start of the season who didn't know what to expect but everyone now knows. It is a good league and some teams don't necessarily have the same quality in the forward areas so we know if we do our job in staying solid defensively we're more than good enough going forward. Nothing comes easy in this league and it shows how resilient we are as a group. We've got some lads putting their bodies on the line for the full 90 minutes. As a fan you want to see guys putting their bodies on the line and giving their all to make sure the team gets the best result they can. A fourth clean sheet on the bounce is brilliant for us.”

Finally, we have been allocated 4,195 tickets for Port Vale away in the FA Cup. Tickets will go on sale on Thursday, November 1 to season card holders with 10 or more Black Cat points. At the back end of the 1980s, football fanzines began to sweep the country and in 1989 we were presented with a new vehicle on which to enjoy some of this ride – A Love Supreme. ALS was a place we could all go to celebrate and commiserate being a Sunderland fan. Win, lose or draw, the pages of the fanzine became solace for many of us as we stumbled our way through our day to day lives, punctuated by the ups and downs of more match days than any of us care to remember.
