Loovens Lands

Glenn Loovens seems delighted to have become our seventh summer signing. The 34-year-old Dutchman arrives on a free and has signed a two-year-deal. He said: "I’m very pleased. Sunderland is a big club with great support, so I can’t wait to get started. They phoned me a couple of weeks ago through my agent, we’ve been working on it ever since then. I’ve been on holiday in Italy and got the final phone call yesterday, I got on a plane so now I’m here. I’ve been training on my own, which is not the best thing for pre-season so I can’t wait to get on the pitch and get involved. The manager just came to say hello and showed me around the place. Of course, I want to play a part for the club and his team. I’ve got lost already twice! The place looks really nice, I can’t get wait to started and get in the team, get as fit as possible. I’ve played here before so I know the support is amazing. The more, the merrier."

Jack Ross had this to say about our latest addition. “When we sign a player we have to think carefully about why we’re recruiting them, and we have quite a young squad so we need players with leadership qualities and experience. Glenn has all of that in abundance, plus he’s looked after himself physically and his recent playing history is very good in terms of the amount of games he’s played. It’s also a position where we need strength in depth, so he ticks a lot of boxes, and he’ll be good for our dressing room. He was very popular at Sheffield Wednesday and people speak very highly of him, and his playing pedigree obviously speaks for itself. He’s a strong character and those qualities – in the dressing room and on the pitch – will be helpful for us this year, as it’s a long season with a lot of games.”
