McNair Gone

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Paddy McNair has finally moved to Middlesbrough for £5million. A Boro statement read: "The Ballyclare-born man returned from injury to end last season with a string of impressive performances, and four goals in his last five games further demonstrated his eye for goal. Due to the terms of the deal, the fee will remain undisclosed."

A Sunderland statement said: "Sunderland AFC can confirm Paddy McNair has joined Middlesbrough for an undisclosed fee. The 23-year-old arrived from Manchester United in 2016 and went on to make 28 appearances for the Lads during a two-year spell. Everyone at the club would like to wish Paddy the best of luck for the future."

McNair had this to say about the move: “That’s the thing with transfers – it always takes a couple of weeks and you have to be patient sometimes. I’m absolutely delighted to be here - from the first time I spoke to the manager here and knew that Middlesbrough were interested, I was dying to come. It’s been a hard last 12 months (with Sunderland) but at the same time it was a learning curve, and it will stand me in good stead. There’s no easy game in the Championship and you have to be physically and mentally ready for it. Hopefully we can achieve the goal at the end of the season, and that’s to get back to the Premier League. I’m glad I’ve come here at the start of pre-season and I’m looking forward to getting to know the lads. I can’t wait to get going.”
