Transfer Tall Tales...

June 19, 2018

It's another day of uncorroborated transfer speculation as we appear to be linked with every player that has a) been linked with us before, b) is out of contract, or c) ever played for, played against or stood next to Jack Ross in the bogs.

Firstly, we’re meant to be close to agreeing a loan deal with Celtic to bring Calvin Miller to the SoL. The 20 year old is highly rated by Brendan Rogers at Parkhead and a season at SAFC could suit both parties. The left-back has only made 4 appearances for The Bhoys but has impressed enough to be offered a new deal.

Next up we're allegedly after the former St Mirren striker Gavin Reilly who is now a free agent. He scored 22 goals in 44 appearances for the Buddies last term, so if my maths serve me right that's a 1 in 2 average. The lad had this to say when he was released: “I did have a contract on the table at St Mirren when Jack was there but I had a hectic summer, trying to sort things out with the baby, and that was my priority. When I got round to thinking about things Jack left for Sunderland so it was up the air as we had to wait and see who the new manager would be. The new manager has come in and my agent has had contact with him and it’s his decision he is taking the deal off the table. It’s not my decision to leave. I was still considering the deal but the new manager has decided he doesn’t want to keep me."

Then there's AFC Wimbledon striker Lyle Taylor and Scunthorpe's Hakeeb Adelakun, both of whose contracts are due to expire. Taylor netted 16 times in League 1 last season so knows the ins and outs of this division well. Adelakun on the other hand has a less than stellar goal-scoring record but the former West Ham youth team player is much more of a wide forward.

In midfield the links to Hibernian’s John McGinn just won’t go away but the £5m asking price could prove to be a stumbling block, that and the fact that he's heavily linked with a move to Celtic makes us think this one’s a no-goer.

We don't have to travel too far for the next link as we're also after fellow Hib's midfielder Dylan McGeouch. The 25 year old is another player whose contract is due to expire and could be snapped up sharpish by Sunderland. This one could be a bit risky though as McGeouch has had some bother with a series of injuries over the last few years. He did however play 40+ times last season and made it into the Scotland squad... but once again had to pull out injured.

Next it's the centre half position. One that we're pretty desperate to fill with the upcoming departure of John O Shea. We're allegedly still looking at QPR, and former SAFC defender Nedum Onuoha but any interest seems to have cooled since the initial link. After that there's the trio of Luton's Dan Potts, Shrewsbury's Toto Nsiala and Clark Robertson who, you've guessed it, is available on a free as he's out of contract at Blackpool.

Goalkeeping wise we've already lost Lee Camp (ed - he's small enough to lose like) as he's returned to Cardiff and, amazingly enough, it looks like Jason Steele could also be on his way as he's set to complete a move to an unnamed Premier League club. That leaves only Robbin Ruiter as our first choice stopper.

And that's your lot. Good luck sifting through those shite rumours. Basically if you're Scottish or out of contract you're guaranteed to be linked with us, and for those Scots whose contracts are also due to expire you've basically signed already.

At the back end of the 1980s, football fanzines began to sweep the country and in 1989 we were presented with a new vehicle on which to enjoy some of this ride – A Love Supreme. ALS was a place we could all go to celebrate and commiserate being a Sunderland fan. Win, lose or draw, the pages of the fanzine became solace for many of us as we stumbled our way through our day to day lives, punctuated by the ups and downs of more match days than any of us care to remember.
