Transfer Craic

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has squashed reports of a third bid by Brighton for Paddy McNair. “No truth. I have not heard from Brighton since turning down their offer. I don’t want to hear from them would prefer Paddy stay. Also, there are other clubs that are closer to our valuation than Brighton so I’m not sure where that story has come from. We will see.”

In other news, Executive Director Charlie Methven has been speaking about Sunderland's transfer business, revealing a number of clubs are interested in our players. “In terms of outgoings, there’s a lot of interest. There are people who are trying it on to test us out and see if we’re desperate, and then they get a bit more serious. We’re not in the game of pretending that we want to keep all of those players, but we are in the game of holding out for the best possible fee for Sunderland.”

Meanwhile, Jack Ross has spoken of the youth at Sunderland and his plans to get the best out of them next season. “When you’ve got a category one academy you should be producing good young players. I know there’s also some with first team experience, so it is about that next step which is consistency and that is the hardest one to take. It is the final part and the hardest one, so you have to have an environment where they can prosper. Part of that is being faithful to them in difficult periods, trusting in them with which means they can trust themselves. I’m excited by what I hear about these guys because it certainly seems there’s a good chance they can establish themselves as regulars. As a manager I’ve always found that you don’t properly get a feel for them until you work with them on the training ground. Even if you watch them pitchside until you have that contact day in, day out, you don’t really get a sense of their potential. It’ll be the same with all the players, young and older, but is a process that excites me.”
