It’s a summer of promise and expectation for Sunderland. We have new owners who know what they’re doing; a promising young manager who is hungry for success; and the stage is set for us to hopefully catapult straight back up. Jack Ross is expected to bring several players in this summer, and here’s a little bit about players that have been linked.
The first Scot on this list and a graduate from the St. Mirren academy, McGinn has been linked with a few clubs already this summer. He got 6 goals and 8 assists for Hibernian last season and is a Scotland International so would be a well needed addition to Sunderland. There is reportedly a £3 million price tag, but we should have enough to make a deal go through. He only has a year left on his contract, so any bid made by Sunderland should be enough to turn an eye. Hibs boss Neil Lennon has already admitted it would leave the club in a difficult position.
Jack Ross has apparently offered to loan the young left winger from Celtic. He played under Ross at St. Mirren last season and impressed massively scoring 14 goals and getting 6 assists in their promotion push. He was signed by Celtic in January, but he was loaned back to St. Mirren to help them win the Scottish Championship. He would certainly have a lot to offer for Sunderland, if he could bring the same form he showed last season into League One. We need more goals and assists in the side and Morgan has the creativity to bring that. However, Brendan Rogers is looking to give him a chance to prove himself, so we will not have a decision right away.
Sunderland need new strikers this summer. Someone who can guarantee goals because we have been too shit in front of goal recently. Jack Marriot is someone who can bring that quality into the team. He was the top scorer in League One last season scoring 27 goals, also managing to grab 5 assists. He is valued at around £5 million by Peterborough and is wanted by many clubs in the Championship. But if we offered him a good deal, the chance to come to Sunderland may be too good to turn down with the potential the club has at the moment, he could be the focal point of the attack.
Club: Burton Albion
Naylor is a versatile player who can play in the centre of midfield, centre back and full back. Sunderland need a reliable defence after mistakes have cost us too many times. He is out of contract this summer and we have been linked with a move to sign him on a free, which would be ideal. The defender has plenty of experience at this level and was part of the Burton side that won promotion to the Championship in 2016. He would be a useful addition to a Sunderland side lacking in defensive options, with his versatility and experience vital.
The Durham born midfielder can play in attacking midfield or out on the wing, as is a real creative force. In League One last season, he managed 8 goals and 18 assists for Peterborough, which emphasises his ability at this level. Maddison is expected to be allowed to move on this summer to further his career, and a move back to the North-East to join a revitalised Sunderland would be the perfect move for both him and the club. Once again, like other players on this list, Championship clubs are also interested in the player, so we will have to make him a persuasive offer if we want to land him.
