HAVE WE GOT THE POWER?

Max Power has opened up about his time so far at the Stadium of Light, speaking about everything from his Wembley heartbreak in the Checkatrade Trophy final, to his ‘burning desire’ to help the lads achieve promotion this season.

"We'd just got promoted back to the Championship and I'd be lying if I said I wanted to leave Wigan, I didn't, like any footballer, I wanted to play as high up as I could. But when a club of Sunderland's stature comes in for you, it’s going to turn anyone's head, regardless of what division the club is in. When I looked at the squad they had, and having played in League One the previous season, I fully expected Sunderland to go straight back up. It didn't work out that way and then last season, who knows what, would have happened? It was cut short due to coronavirus. It's two years where it has not gone to plan; it's as simple as that. I'm in the final year of my contract here and I won't shy away from the fact that if we don't get promoted in my time here, I'd see it as a failure, so hopefully it will be third time lucky. I love it up here, and my kids are settled in school up here and if all goes according to plan, I'd love to see us get promoted and then extend my stay here. I'd like to be here as long as possible and I've got that burning desire to get promoted. I'm realistic enough to know that I would do very well to top playing for Sunderland. I turned 27 last month and I feel that I'm coming into prime, and I'd love the club to win promotion and get heading back in the right direction.”
