Gaffer Post Wycombe

Sunderland lost Phil Parkinson’s first game in charge as we were beaten 1-0 by Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

Parkinson had this to say afterwards: “A difficult game, we knew it would be and the way Wycombe played, very physical and get the ball in the box and put you under pressure. I thought we competed well and it is so disappointing to concede from a set play. We spoke about not giving away needless free-kicks away and we did and we got punished for it. We lost the first header and they reacted quickest to second ball. The way we approached it and the way the lads were going about their business was good but we knew it was the area they were strong, we got punished. We had a lot of the ball, did we create enough? Show enough quality? Probably not but it wasn’t a lack of effort and heart from the lads - we just didn’t produce enough moments of quality to get the goal back. We can’t get too low from the defeat, dust ourselves down and go again Tuesday.”

The manager also revealed that Charlie Wyke suffered ankle ligament damage, whilst Aiden McGeady picked up his fifth booking and will serve a one-game ban. Parkinson said: “It is a quick turnaround, it is very busy period coming up, we have lost Charlie, he has done his ankle ligaments. That is a shame as he was leading the line really well first half, that is a shame for us, in the first 25 minutes he twisted his ankle and was unable to carry on. It doesn’t look good, we will get him scanned quickly and an assessment on that. I thought Charlie did well, I thought Griggy did well when he came on too in fairness. It was frustrating to lose Charlie though. Charlie did what we asked him to do in that 45 minutes. We have good players and the stage is there now for somebody to grab hold of it and say they want to be the main man at the top end of the pitch.”
