Where To Strengthen

Following a frustratingly slow start to the transfer market, where does Jack Ross’ team need improving in order to compete for promotion?

Goalkeeper

The recent departures of backups Robbin Ruiter and Max Stryjek has created a problem for Jack Ross, as he is left with no second option in case Jon McLaughlin gets injured or suspended. It is likely that Dimi will join as a short-term option at 40 years old, but there is a case to be argued that we will still need another reserve.

Right Back

Luke O’Nien has filled in well at right back but will want to be pushed further up the field this coming season. Matthews’ exit has made it clear that we need at least one right back, even if O’Nien’s future is in defence.

Left Back

Reece James’ shock transfer to Doncaster made yet another issue at the back for Ross. It is looking likely that Bryan Oviedo will leave, and Denver Hume will be expecting a more prominent role next year. We need to sign cover in this position when Oviedo leaves.

Centre Back

Alim Ozturk won a few over at the back end of last season and Tom Flanagan had a half decent season, but I feel neither are good enough to play week in week out in a promotion winning team. So, Ross surely needs two quality and commanding centre halves following the disappointment of the defence last year. Baldwin and Loovens need to go…

Central Midfield

Our midfield is stacked; the problem is they’re all the same style of player, 5’8 deep-lying playmakers. What we need here is a massive mobile destroyer who cleans up, shielding the defence.

Attacking Midfield

There’s a clear gap between the midfield and attack that needs plugging. George Honeyman grafts, but we need a creative player who can make chances out of nothing. Marcus Maddison would be ideal in this role behind the striker, but it is also Chris Maguire’s natural position.

Wingers

The only quality wide man we have at the club is Aiden McGeady, so we need another top-quality wide man to torture defences on the right-hand side.

Forwards

In theory Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg should be enough to fire the goals in, especially if we only play one up front. However, we obviously need cover in that position. It would also be nice to bring in someone better than Wyke, Tom Eaves for example.

Whoever we bring in it would be good if we get a move on because the season starts on August 3…
