We have allegedly had a bid in the region of £200,000, plus add ons, knocked back for Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg, but the deal is not dead.
We've been drawn at home to Man City u21s in the quarter-final of the Checkatrade Trophy. The tie will be played on the week commencing January 21
Meanwhile, Jerome Sinclair has returned to Watford after starting just 11 games and scoring twice. Jack Ross said: “Jerome has been a credit to himself and his club Watford in his time here. I cannot speak highly enough of him and how he has applied himself during his loan spell and as a club we have conveyed this to Watford. Everyone at Sunderland AFC wishes Jerome the very best in the next stage of his career.”
In other news, Charlie Methven is keen to give Jack Ross whatever he wants in the transfer window. How nice! “We had a holding company board meeting of me, Juan (Sartori) and Stewart (Donald) before Charlton and said that on any level it makes sense to say to Jack, whatever you need, we will give it to you. We don’t want to look back in may and say, ‘If we’d just done X or Y...’ and we certainly don’t want Jack turning around in May and saying, ‘I asked for X or Y and if you’d given me it we’d have done it (won promotion).’ Knowing that he’s a sensible guy who wouldn’t suggest something that wasn’t feasible, we just told him to try and minimise the reasons why we might end up not doing what we need to do. We need to be better at set pieces so we went out into the market to find a centre-back who is excellent in the air,” Methven explained. “TC (head of recruitment Tony Coton) was given the instruction to find a mobile, 6ft 4in centre-back who’d be able to play the way Jack wants to play. There was no point bringing a clogger in. The other reason why any team might end up not getting promoted is because the goals dry up a bit because players lose a bit of form, a bit of confidence – whatever it might be – so you just need something different just to keep the goal meter ticking over and that’s what we’re out in the market looking for now. I would expect us to bring in two and maybe three if nothing happens with Josh (Maja). There’s been no real suggestion (of a bid). Not only have been there been no bids, there’s been no significant interest.”
