While the term must win is somewhat overused when it comes to manager’s jobs, relegation battles and derbies, I can’t help feeling that this weekend’s game against Bradford could give us a major indication of where this season will take us.
As is the way with the Football League, the games come thick and fast. No sooner are we picking up the pieces of an injury fest at Coventry, we then add more to the treatment table and Mr Oviedo is banned for three games after the thrilling 2.2 draw at home to Peterborough.
This weekend presents us with a real opportunity to stay well in the race at the top. Our opponents Bradford, with only three wins so far and a mere eight goals (joint worst with rock bottom Plymouth) are having a poor start and sitting in 19th. Jack Ross must be looking at The Bantams as there for the taking. Throw in the Blackpool postponement and we could find ourselves 10 points off top when we line up at Shrewsbury.
The international break should give us a chance to get back some of our injured players. With Duncan Watmore now in full training, so he can’t be far away. Surely come November we should be coming on strong.
A win at Valley Parade will keep the pressure on and should Pompey, Posh and/or Donny drop points we will be right in the mix as we approach a quarter of the season gone. However, it’s worth remembering before this weekend we are only two points above Charlton in 8th and things could change very quickly.
After the international break we return with two away games in four days. Firstly, at Shrewsbury who blow hot and cold with five wins and five defeats and then a top of the table clash at Doncaster.
So, we really need a win this weekend to keep our season on track…
