Name: Michael Hines
Age (If you want):42
How long you've supported the club: 31 years
What was your pre-match predictions for the game (honestly)? 2-1, 3-1
Was the 3-0 score line a fair result in your eyes?
Yes before the game, but not after watching it, 2-1 would’ve been fair, or 2-0.
Are you over the humiliation of Havant and Waterlooville last week?
Beautifully worded question. Not humiliated. A club in the Premier League can’t ‘win’ in a match like that, if we win 59-0 its expected. Anything else, they’re ‘plucky’ and everyone want to see a big team fall. I know as a Liverpool fan you’d expect this of me, but Man Utd drawing to Burton Albion 0-0 is more of an embarrassment. Not scoring is a bad thing. That said, I was appalled at the second goal they got, simple mistake and deflection. But there we are.
Can you explain to us what the heck is going on at Liverpool? I.e. what’s the craic with your American owners?
Well in a nutshell Hicks made a sensible move, in business terms, of making sure we had a back up if Rafa left. Alas who he approached and the manner in which he did was appalling. Klinsmann knows fuck all about running a PL club, and to announce it months later, totally underminded the manager. Then he and Gilette realised they didn’t have enough money to fund the new stadium and also had to renegociate the loan they borrowed to buy the club.
Since then Hicks’ PR has gone from bad to worse, and Gilette has gone quiet. Rumours from Gilette joining forces with DIC (Dubai) to a fans buyout abound. Meanwhile, Rafa hasn’t been at his best and shown petulance sometimes at the manner in which he’s been treated, and yet also has shown immense patience at putting up with the useless owners who believe in an American Coach system, not the manager rules all that English clubs have. Also! The team have been lacklustre and Rafa’s selections haven’t helped so it’s been a right laugh.
What’s your take on their takeover? Are you glad or sad?
Glad at the time, like most fans because we fell for the hype and the chat, Tom and George talking of tradition and so on. But now the club is saddled with about 105m debt and theyhave behaved and undermined the traditions of Liverpool so much that we are a)embarrassed and b) want them out. No doubt motivated by feeling foolish that we fell for it in the first place.
Back to the game, your league form has been poor of late, how vital was it that you picked up three points?
Of course it was vital. With due respect we expect to beat Sunderland and most teams at Anfield, but that home form has let us down. However, all the other teams around us drawing (still waiting for the Villa result) and Chelsea too, it was even more important that we didn’t lost anymore ground. Finally, it was an important confidence boost before the Chelsea and Inter games coming up.
It appeared we were denied a blatant penalty after Carragher’s handball, what was your take on the incident?
I’ll take the Wenger amendment on this one.
Was it pleasing to do one over your old enemy Mr Keane?
Always a pleasure. I have married into a Sunderland family so have a soft spot for the team, and also now, a soft spot for the action man himself with realistic hair. But yes he played for the shower up the East Lancs Rd, and no matter who he played for, was a graceless footballer. Talented but terrible attitude.
Anyways are you optimistic for the rest of the season? Whereabouts do you
think you'll finish?
Fourth, maybe third if Chelsea implode. But we are just as likely to as they will, if not more given the current problems.
Who was your best player?
Hyypia in defence, Benayoun balanced the defence but Torres once again showed with the second goal why we rely on him so much. Crouch did very well drawing defenders and creating space for Torres and for a shite header of the ball, scored a good goal. However at the end of the day I’d say Mascherano, a mini Roy Keane, nipping at heels all over the park and one of the few Liverpool players actually up for the game.
Who was your worst player?
Styles? (only kidding) Aurelio seemed totally quiet and Pennant carries on frustrating. Gerrard played in fits and starts..
What did you think of Sunderland's performance?
Well after the first half, partly due to us and partly due to the 4-4-1-1 (or 4-5-1?) Roy put out, I thought you might get a point, but Nosworthy reminds me of Traore, always alarming when they go near the ball. On the whole you played well at times, but seemed to be only fired up towards the end. It was as if some of your players expected to lose, or find it really hard to play. But your side is strong and big and showed some class now and them.
Who was our best player?
Craig Gordon no question. Great shot stopper. Outside the net? Probably Chopra, or O Donovan when he came on.
Who was our worst player?
Notworthy.
Where do you think we'll finish this season?
Hope you miss relegation I really do, and its possible but I also think that’s up to the teams around you too, its not just in your hands. So I’ll say one or two places above the relegation spot.
Your predictions for:
Premier League: Arsenal I really really hope.
FA Cup: Us. Or Utd sadly.
Carling Cup: fuck knows.
Relegation: Derby, Fulham and either Wigan or Birmingham.
Please rate the following 1 to 10 (10 being the best):
Atmosphere: better after the game during the protest… between 4 and 7 depending on the action.
Your fans: as above
Our fans: away fans are always better than home fans at singing so 7-8
Your team:6 with occasional 8’s
Our team: 6, Craig Gordon 8
Who'd win in a fight? Rafa Benitez or Roy Keane? And why?
Roy, cos he’d let bouncer off the leash and Rafa would try and make tapas with it, thus allowing Roy to kneecap Benitez.
Thanks for your time
Not at all mate.
