Sunderland v spurs...
well, well, well

I was a bit nervous about this game beforehand as Spurs had their tails up after beating the Smogs 4-0 the other night and in the match down here in August Lennon had impressed me with his dribbling ability. With Keane back in the side I could see the two of them causing us a few problems. A win would be a great result and I thought we were capable of just squeezing one.

I was away last night and didn’t get home till just before 4pm when I got 5Live on to discover we were 1-0 up. Radio summarizer Steve Stone said that Cisse didn’t seem very interested while both he and Kenwyne weren’t making much movement off the ball, but next thing Kenwyne made a crucial headed clearance after Fulop missed the ball.

Then Bent fluffed a great chance to equalize after a back-pass by Whitehead and we were sounding sloppy at the back though Collins was coming in for plenty of praise. Chimbonda was getting booed and Cisse caught him on the head just to add to the warm welcome. Cisse missed a couple of great chances after two good crosses by Reid but if he was having an off day, Gomes in the Spurs goal was sounding encouragingly wobbly.

With twenty minutes to go Murphy replaced Cisse and it sounded not before time. Spurs started pressurizing more and we escaped a penalty against us when the ball hit Bardsley’s hand. Redknapp was going apoplectic apparently, which didn’t sound a pretty sight. With ten minutes left and with Spurs pressing I commenced my usual pacing around the room, watering plants and adjusting books to try and wind down my own clock.

Edwards and Leadbitter replaced Reid and Richardson and then Ben Haim, who was having a good game, put a dangerous ball out for a corner with his balls while he was lying spreadeagled on the deck; what a guy!

Three minutes to go and the SoL crowd were tense and then in the last minute we were denied what sounded like a good penalty shout, again, when Ledley King and Kenwyne went down in the box only for Spurs to break quickly and for Keane to score. BAAAASSSTTTAAAARRDDSS!

Four minutes of added time were announced but we couldn’t get a winner and had to settle for a point, which was a real sickener. Still, we moved up a place with what was a game in hand on many of our rivals and replaced Hull. Bring on Wigan but we need to get our attackers pepped up before then.
